Hip hop music received much-deserved recognition in August 2020 as BronxNet TV hosted a series of concerts, dance performances and DJ battles highlighting the genre. This entertaining event was a successful effort to celebrate hip hop’s 47th anniversary.
Windows of Hip Hop, Hip Hop Film Festival, Bronx Edulution and the Bronx borough president collaborated to bring this event to life for long-time hip hop fans and newcomers to the genre.
BronxNet’s executive director, Michael Max Knobbe, described this programming lineup as not only a celebration of the founding talents of hip hop, but as a thank-you for their contributions to musical culture. The Bronx is the birthplace of hip hop, and Mr. Knobbe cited the importance of recognizing the legends that live among us.
Viewers enjoyed two 2018 hip hop concert replays, presented by the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. They also had the pleasure of seeing five legendary hip hop artists receive honors during a showing of the 2020 Elements of Hip Hop Awards, presented by Windows of Hip Hop.
Plenty of hip hop notables made appearances throughout the event. Melle Mel, born and raised in the Bronx, was the MC for the much-anticipated DJ battle between Grand Wizzard Theodore and The Original DJ Jazzy Jay. Kurtis Blow, Rob Base, Biz Markie and many more famous names treated fans to performances throughout the event.
Ruben Diaz Jr., Bronx borough president, showed his support of these cultural icons with a special proclamation delivered during the DJ Battle.
