Amazon is officially setting up shop in South Bronx! This online retail mogul recently signed a lease for warehouse space located at 1055 Bronx River Ave. and is now the company’s most recent last-mile distribution facility in New York City.
Location is critical, and Amazon could not have picked a better place to plan a new delivery station. According to a report by the New York Business Journal, an Amazon spokeswoman mentioned that this new warehouse is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to this up-and-coming Bronx neighborhood.
The building is owned by Prologis and is officially known as “Prologis Bronx.” Prologis is one of the United States’ most prominent industrial landlords.
Prologis executives tout this location as a prime space to host a last-mile delivery center. The new Amazon facility is situated along the Bruckner Expressway and is near the major bridges that connect the Bronx and Manhattan, including the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge. It also lies a short eight miles from LaGuardia Airport and 16 miles from John F. Kennedy Airport.
In addition to this new South Bronx facility, Amazon has also recently leased warehouse space in Staten Island and at Rentar Plaza in Queens. These new Amazon leases are examples of the industrial market’s demand despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
Jet.com, a Walmart-owned ecommerce website, vacated the warehouse in late 2019 after an unsuccessful attempt in the fresh grocery delivery market. Since leaving the warehouse, Walmart has totally suspended operations at Jet.com.
