The Arts in Medicine Community Mural Project Returns to New York City

Ten NYC Health + Hospitals healthcare facilities, including the Bronx’s Jacobi and Lincoln Hospitals, will experience the joy of art as patients, staff, community residents and specially-selected artists collaborate to create a unique mural at each location.

This project is a part of NYC Health + Hospitals’ Arts in Medicine initiative. Each mural will be designed through virtual focus groups and crafted into a work of art during scheduled painting sessions.

More than 140 artists applied for this project, and 11 were ultimately selected. One or two artists will be assigned to each location to facilitate the mural from start to finish. Artists Andrei Krautsou and Yuliya Puhach will be coordinating the mural development at Jacobi Hospital, while Arantxa Rodriguez will be coordinating the mural at Lincoln Hospital.

In order to be selected, each artist needed to demonstrate a history of community collaboration, understand how to incorporate materials appropriate for a medical setting, undergo a portfolio review and participate in an interview. They also needed to effectively apply one of several themes, including Stronger Together, ICARE Values, Freedom to Thrive and Health & Wellness for All.

According to Dr. Machelle Allen, NYC Health + Hospitals’ Senior Vice President, the Arts in Medicine mural initiative is an opportunity to demonstrate the organization’s commitment to holistic health care.

Although COVID-19 has changed the way this year’s project is executed, it still proves to be a successful way to foster creativity, increase trust and build engagement between the healthcare facilities and surrounding communities.
